Shamanism is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of spiritual healing available. Historically, the Shaman’s job was to help their tribe stay in right alignment with the physical and spiritual world; they would get guidance on where to travel, how to find food and water, and how to treat the land. The survival of the tribe would often depend upon the guidance they received and how they implemented it.

These days, a Shaman’s focus is much more directed towards an individual than a group, as we don’t live in a tribal society any more.

What Does Shamanism Heal?

There are many different ways a Shaman can help an individual, all depending on what is causing their symptoms or problem. The most common is helping those who have experienced some sort or trauma or life experience that they are struggling to overcome. This can be something that has affected us physically, mentally or emotionally; a car accident, a negative experience as a child or a relationship break up for example.

The trauma we are struggling with often then manifest over time causing secondary issues such as anxiety, depression and OCD. People commonly form addictions to substances or behaviours as a coping mechanism too.

How Does Shamanism Work?

Shamanism focuses on healing the spiritual aspect of an illness – often the physical, mental and emotional side of an issue can’t be resolved until the spiritual aspect is addressed.

When we have a negative life experience, it damages our energy body and there will be some kind of intrusion or blockage as a result. If the trauma is particularly bad, we will leave a part of our soul at the time and place of the trauma, to shield us from the full impact of what has happened.

We sometimes develop limiting beliefs as a part of this process too. If you’re constantly being told you’re useless by your parents, you may well develop this belief later in life.

A shaman will go into trance (usually with the help of a drum) and travel through the spirit world to work on an individual. They will call upon their spirit guides to help remove intrusions and blockages, return soul parts and replace negative agreements so that a person can live in better alignment with the world around them.

The Outcome

Most people will feel completely different about the issue they have been struggling with after a session. They will no longer feel the pain or sadness from the trauma they’ve experienced, they’ll feel more aligned and generally feel better about life resulting in more motivation and energy.

An individual will still need to work on integrating the healing into the physical world and that takes effort on their behalf, but the energetic issues that have been holding them back will be gone. As a result, the coping behaviours such as addiction will also start to improve.

What Else Can A Shaman Help With?

There are many different aspects of shamanism which are used depending on the cause of a person’s illness or issues:

  • Ancestral clearing – removing issues that have been passed down our family line from our ancestors
  • Removing curses or entities that have attached to someone
  • Space clearing – removing negative energy or a spiritual presence from places or buildings where we live and work
  • Environmental shamanism – providing healing to our natural environment
  • Psychopomp – helping passed souls who are stuck in middle world to cross over. This normally happens when a person has died quite suddenly or in unusual circumstances and they have a message to pass on to someone. Once the message has been passed on, they will move on.

Why Choose Shamanism Over Other Healing Modalities?

There are benefits to many different types of healing, but the main advantage Shamanism has over other forms of healing is that the healing is permanent, because the issues in your energy body have been removed permanently.
